The Australian Chronicles
By Mary Ann Kerzel
The Final Day
Our
last adventure before leaving for home began driving around in circles trying
to find The Great Ocean Road, which runs along the southwestern coast of
Australia. The Great Ocean Road
is exactly that, a narrow, very long and very winding two-lane road! Not a single guardrail anywhere and at times
very close to the edge! David
didn’t mind the drive but then he was not on the side of the car that was going
off the road on the cliff side!
Very, very, very high cliffs!
Okay I admit it; M-5 really is a super highway!
Having spent so much time trying to
get out of town we didn’t have enough time to drive all the way to Fort
Campbell and the natural sandstone formations (carved by wind and sea) called
the Twelve Apostles so we settled for checking out Erskine Falls near
Lorne. We walked all the way up
to the fall. Then we went on to The
Split Rock Lighthouse and Eagle Rock at Aireys Inlet. David likes to photograph lighthouses. Eagle Rock is a really huge rock formation out in the ocean near
the lighthouse that resembles a huge bird’s nest.
Australia is a very interesting place to visit and I believe worth the trip. My one regret is that we had so little time and only just scratched the surface of a wondrous country. I highly recommend going if you have the chance and stay for 3 or 4 weeks.
